Navarro says that biomass can generate "thousands" of jobs in Extremadura

The Minister of Industry, Energy and Environment of Extremadura, José Luis Navarro, has highlighted the "great potential" to generate employment that has the production of electricity from forest, agricultural or livestock waste, so that the biomass sector can create "thousands" of jobs in the coming years in Extremadura.

It is "by far" the renewable energy that needs the most labor for its operation, as Navarro said in his speech in Mérida at the 'Demonstration workshop on the energy use of agroforestry waste', organized by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Environment, within the framework of the Altercexa project of the Operational Program of Transfonteriza Cooperation Spain-Portugal, which are being developed by seven Spanish and Portuguese partners.

As reported by the Board in a press release, in this sense, Navarro has pointed out that the Miajadas plant, recently inaugurated, is the "example to follow", since with fifteen megawatts it generates 100 jobs, 25 in plant and 75 in the field, he explained.

"Plants of this type facilitate the fulfillment of the objectives for the progressive reduction of external energy dependence, the fight against climate change and the preservation of the environment and the creation of industries and employment," said the Extremaduran minister of Industry.

However, he has recognized that in Extremadura as in other communities, biomass "has not just taken off", perhaps, he points out, due to "the lack of knowledge of investors about the profitability and safety of the sector", although "today it is possible to obtain the necessary authorizations to immediately obtain the collection of the special remuneration for the production of this type of energy, once the registration in the Pre-assignment Registry of the Ministry of Industry has been requested and provided that all the necessary circumstances are met and the requirements are met".

To overcome this "obstacle", Navarro considers it necessary to dialogue between the agricultural, industrial and investor sectors to promote trust, greater disclosure to publicize the potential of biomass and the creation of a legal-administrative-economic framework, so that all parties involved in the production process "are calm".

He also pointed out that the Junta de Extremadura has "interest" in promoting the generation of electricity with forest, agri-food and even livestock waste, such as slurry, with which Extremadura could exceed 300 megawatts of power among all variants.

ALTERCEXA PROJECT

The Altercexa Project, approved within the framework of the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program 2007-2013, is coordinated by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Environment and has as its general objective the promotion of energy production with alternative sources in the regions of Centro, Alentejo and Extremadura.

Among other researches, the study of viable solutions for the application of renewable energies and energy efficiency in transport in Extremadura has been carried out; for the use of biogas and energy crops in Extremadura and biomass in Esteva and biogas in the Ecopark of Évora.

The demonstration workshop on the energy use of agroforestry waste will take place in Mérida until this Wednesday, day 24, and will resume on Monday 29 with a visit to the company Recimaex, in Vivares (biomass logistics), ending on Tuesday, day 30, with the visit to the Balneario El Raposo, in Puebla de Sancho Pérez, to know the use of biomass for thermal use.
