Limited supply of air conditioning technicians in Peru

Peru. The air conditioning industry in Peru has grown in the last decade at an average rate of 15%, the main factor being the growth of shopping center construction projects throughout the country. This situation has caused the demand for technical personnel specialized in air conditioning systems to increase, without finding enough supply.

According to the general manager of Serviparamo, Carlos Castaño, in Peru there is a good base of experienced engineers, but it is insufficient given the permanent growth of the market. "Having trained professionals is a necessity of all companies in the air conditioning sector, both for its growth, but also for the new technologies that are coming to Peru," Castaño told local media El Comercio.

Once an air conditioning system is installed, it is necessary to have specialists who are responsible for carrying out constant maintenance of it. "A good maintenance of the air conditioning system, allows a saving of between 10% and 20% in the use of energy, in addition to prolonging the useful life of the equipment that is between 3 and 5 years to 10 and 20 years, depending on the working conditions," Castaño said.

Air conditioning certification
Some private companies have already started training projects in air conditioning systems and equipment. However, to respond to the current demand it would be necessary for more universities, and private and public technological schools, to develop specializations, which, in addition to technical issues of refrigeration or thermodynamics,  take into account existing national and international certifications.

"In Serviparamo Peru, for example, we have an alliance with Linc Service, an international company specialized in maintenance of air conditioning systems. This company is responsible for certifying every year 3 to 10 Serviparamo specialists, so that they know how to perform adequate preventive or corrective maintenance, "says Castaño.

It should be noted that currently, the average salary of a technician specialized in air conditioning can range from S /. 1,500 for helpers up to S/. 3,500 for those with more experience.
