They use geothermal energy to heat and cool the metro system

International. In Nagpur, India, the Mahametro transportation system intends to reduce energy costs for heating and cooling meters thanks to geothermal heat pumps. The system is expected to reduce the cost of operation by 10% to 15%. This central cooling system will transfer heat to the ground or from the ground.

A Mahametro official explained that the heat pump consists of a series of wells 80-100 meters deep with a double "u" tube, along with collectors for the connection of a series of such boreholes. He explained that "vertical holes provide a means of heat dissipation in the soil. Since, the water at 80-100 meters deep underground is at a constant temperature, the temperature of the cooling water from geological exchange is in a constant temperature zone between 25 and 30 ° C."

The official further said, "considering that the cooling water temperature of the cooling tower has a large variation as a function of the variable ambient temperature of the wet bulb and is usually 4 to 5 °C higher than the temperature of the available cooling water from the geothermal/geo exchange system. This provides savings in the operating cost of the air conditioning system of up to 10-15%. Experts say that with a temperature increase of 1°C, the operating cost can increase by up to 8 percent."

MahaMetro CEO Brijesh Dixit said the agency decided to enter this system due to growing concerns about the cost and availability of electricity and water. "We will install a cooling system with thermal response 175 (TR). The installation of a test well and a thermal response test (TRT) was carried out. The rest of the closed-loop drilling field is in progress," he added.

"The ground loop array will be connected to a water-cooled refrigerator that primarily provides cooling to the building. An important element in the evolution of this facility is the procurement of the drillfield material from Indian manufacturers and suppliers. The use of this technology will offer a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to existing systems," Dixit added.
