International. Hussmann and Chemours jointly implemented a commercial refrigeration system that operates with A2L refrigerants in one of the most recognized supermarkets in Mexico.
The initiative arose in response to the need to replace an existing system that operated with Opteon XP40 (R-449A), whose global warming potential (GWP) is 1,397. The goal was to migrate to a more sustainable solution, while maintaining high levels of performance and regulatory compliance.
For this purpose, Opteon XL20 (R-454C) refrigerant was selected, with a GWP of 148 (AR4), which represents an 89% reduction in environmental impact compared to the previous refrigerant. This alternative offers a balance between energy efficiency, sustainability and compliance with stricter environmental regulations.
Technical System Configuration
The solution implemented consisted of the installation of two distributed systems, each equipped with two condensing units: one for medium-temperature applications and the other for freezing processes.
The system incorporates variable speed compressors, electronic expansion valves and a state-of-the-art refrigerant, which allows for 12% to 15% more efficiency compared to traditional direct expansion systems.
According to ASHRAE Standard 34, R-454C refrigerant is A2L safety rated, indicating that it is slightly flammable and non-toxic. In this sense, correct installation under safety regulations and codes is essential for its safe operation.
Installation and Performance
The system installation, start-up and commissioning process was comparable to that of traditional Freon-type refrigerants, requiring only compliance with the manufacturer's safety recommendations.
To validate the performance of the system, two data acquisition methods were implemented over a period of approximately two months, which allowed evaluating its behavior in real operating conditions.
The results showed a superior performance compared to the previous system. The new system reached the required temperatures, guaranteeing adequate cooling capacity, as well as an improvement in energy efficiency (EER), meeting the supermarket's operational requirements.
Operational and economic impact
In addition to the environmental benefits, A2L refrigerants have been shown to offer a better total cost of ownership (TCO), by integrating both the initial investment and the operating costs associated with energy consumption and maintenance over the life of the system.
With this development, Hussmann reinforces its strategy of innovation in sustainable solutions for the commercial refrigeration industry in Latin America, aligning with global trends in decarbonization and energy efficiency.
