Ductless heat pumps prove effective in cold climates

International. Ductless heat pumps are defying low temperatures with increasingly advanced technologies, establishing themselves as a reliable solution for heating in regions with harsh winters.

While much of the focus has been on ducted systems, manufacturers such as Fujitsu, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Hitachi are proving that their ductless models can also maintain optimal performance in extreme conditions.

Innovation at the service of comfort

Models like Fujitsu's AIRSTAGE XLTH series maintain more than 90% of their rated capacity even at -22°F, while Hitachi reports 100% performance in temperatures down to -4°F with its airHome series. These solutions incorporate variable-speed compressors, intelligent controls, heaters at the base, and technologies such as adaptive frost detection.

Daikin, on the other hand, offers systems such as Atmosphera and Aurora, which use R-32 refrigerant to improve efficiency in low-temperature conditions, and Mitsubishi Electric bets on its H2i technology with guaranteed operation down to -22 °F.

Good Installation and Maintenance Practices

Manufacturers agree that proper installation is key to performance. This includes mounting the outdoor units above the snow line, performing accurate load calculations and ensuring proper condensate handling. In addition, they highlight the importance of regular maintenance to ensure operation in adverse conditions, such as cleaning filters, coils, and drain pans.

Training and technical support

Companies such as Hitachi offer specialized training for installers, thus reinforcing the proper use of these technologies. Designed for harsh climates, these ductless heat pumps are positioned as an efficient, quiet, and reliable alternative for year-round thermal comfort in the home.
