Cartagena: leading port in cold treatment and refrigerated containers

Contenedor 3 mil Grupo Cartama

Colombia. The port of Cartagena was positioned as a leader in refrigeration in logistics and transport, thanks to the fact that it has 3,444 connections for refrigerated containers. Of this amount, the work of transporting food to Europe of the Port of Cartagena Group stands out.

In that sense, the Group's work has been remarkable at the level of exports. This year, a case that evidences this success is the shipment of more than 3,000 containers of Hass avocado out of the country.

It is worth mentioning that the container with the celebrated number (which can be seen in the photo), of the production company Grupo Cartama, left the port of Cartagena on November 10 and arrived at the port of Rotterdam on the 21st of the same month, because the location of the port makes routes with better weather, by not needing to go through the Panama Canal.

Detail of the success story
To better understand the proportions of this container, and thus the scope of all those that have been shipped during 2022, it is necessary to take into account that it can hold up to 23,360 net kilograms of agricultural product of Colombian origin, distributed in 3,320 boxes.

In addition, for its operation the Port of Cartagena Group has 17 doors and 10 refrigeration chambers, intended for cold loading and the conservation of this type of products.

Ricardo Uribe Lalinde, CEO of Grupo Cartama, said: "It is an immense happiness and a dream come true that perhaps seven years ago we did not imagine achieving. I feel immense gratitude for all the people who made the three thousand container a reality."

A relevant fact is that the avocado producing company, the Cartama Group, is located in the interior of the country, in Pereira (Risaralda), so the best treatment for your product must be guaranteed, for the transport times inside the country and abroad until it reaches its destination.

In addition, Alfonso Salas Trujillo, general manager of the Port of Cartagena Group, said that his company has a cutting-edge infrastructure to preserve the cold chain, which provides confidence to its customers, including obviously the Cartama Group.

Likewise, Salas explained that his company "is consolidated as a distribution point for refrigerated products nationally and internationally and is projected to be the main refrigerated cargo HUB in the Americas. Approximately 524 filling and emptying operations of refrigerated containers are carried out per month, which has allowed Cartagena to position itself as a leading port in the care and treatment of cold.

State-of-the-art infrastructure for cooling
So, the infrastructure that allows the Port of Cartagena Group to operate efficiently is that its 17 doors and 10 refrigeration chambers, located in the Cartagena Container Terminal S.A. (Contecar), can be programmed at negative temperatures between -25°C and 0°C or also positive temperatures, so they are versatile to specific needs.

In addition, this technology, added to the work of its logistics operator, allows to carefully analyze and control the characteristics of humidity and ethylene in the cellars, thanks to sensors arranged for it, and thus avoid the early maturation of the product.

Finally, the group provides security to exporters in the care of their cargo and the possibility of simultaneous inspections within cold rooms.
