United States. ASHRAE announced the launch of a new strategic plan to guide the society's work over the next five years. The ASHRAE Strategic Plan 2019-2024 outlines the society's core values, mission and vision for future success, while also identifying areas where ASHRAE will direct its attention and resources for years to come.
The Association indicated that the previous plan, launched in 2014, resulted in several important achievements, including the extension of ASHRAE's global presence, a greater role in the residential sector, and higher levels of volunteer participation. The new plan's initiatives reflect the society's long-standing commitment to the HVAC&R industry, while seizing opportunities and addressing the challenges that are taking place in the rapidly evolving built environment.
The new strategic plan outlines two areas of initiative:
- Built environment of the future
- Resilient buildings and communities
- Indoor environmental quality
- Future of ASHRAE
- Organizational Rationalization
- Improve chapter engagement, capacity, and support
"In developing our new strategic plan, we take a close look at the changing landscape of our industry as well as the diversity of our members," said Darryl K. Boyce, P.Eng., President of ASHRAE 2019-20. "We seek a wide range of participation from ASHRAE members and key industry organizations on how to best position ASHRAE to address our internal and external challenges, and the result is a concise and straightforward plan based on the values that have motivated members of our society for nearly 125 years."
Some key action elements outlined in the plan include:
- Promote best practices that enable the adaptability, resilience and recovery of buildings and communities related to the challenges of the design and construction process.
- Accelerate thought leadership and understanding of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and its implications for occupant health and well-being.
- Streamline the organization's internal governance to adapt to regional differences and allocate valuable time and resources to the most impactful activities.
- Evaluate and improve methods to better engage the chapters, regions, and members they serve in an integrated manner.
