Johnson Controls Introduces New Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chiller

International. Johnson Controls introduces the York YZ magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller, which they call the first fully optimized chiller for maximum performance with the new refrigerant R-1233zd (E) which is low global warming potential (GWP).

The company explained that R-1233zd (E), has been chosen for its efficiency, safety, easy availability, low environmental impact and cost, being non-flammable has the lowest GWP of 1 and is easy to get with refrigerant manufacturers.

"We have a long history in the industry, delivering the greatest innovation in chiller design," said Laura Wand, vice president of Chillers Solutions, Building Technologies & Solutions at Johnson Controls. "With the new York YZ we have developed the most efficient line of low GWP centrifugal chillers in the world. With our wide range of cooling capabilities we can serve the most diverse application needs of our customers."

For the design and development of the system, Johnson Controls used a comprehensive approach, optimizing each of the components around this state-of-the-art refrigerant being carefully selected to achieve maximum performance. The York YZ Chiller uses a comprehensive advanced technology of variable speed drives and magnetic bearing with which a single mobile system suspended in a magnetic field is obtained, which does not require lubrication.

This technology requires 80 percent fewer moving parts than traditional oil- or coolant-lubricated transmission systems. The result is greater reliability, less need for maintenance and better efficiency. With the YZ it is possible to achieve annual energy savings of up to 35 percent compared to traditional oil-lubricated bearing chillers.

With the YZ chiller, significant energy savings and lower operating costs are achieved, taking advantage of the unforeseen conditions of use under which chillers operate 99 percent of the time. The YZ works under incoming water temperature conditions to the condenser as low as 4.5°C (40°F), achieving the best performance under any working condition and widest operating range in the industry.
