International. Low Carbon City, an initiative born in Colombia, is one of the finalists in the call for climate change of the Echoing Green organization of the United States, where 2879 projects from 164 countries participated and which will select the winners in June.
Low Carbon City is a global, citizen-led movement that creates collective solutions to address climate change and promote emission reductions in cities. In 2016 it mobilized more than 13,000 citizens through workshops, forums and urban interventions around the world.
The initiative has a network of 88 cities working to mitigate climate change through awareness campaigns and the creation of low-carbon neighborhoods. They also created the first Citizen Forum of Low Carbon Cities that was held in Medellín in 2016. This year he will perform the second version in Villahermosa, Mexico from September 5 to 7.
This initiative was inspired by the new Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the importance of citizen participation. Cities consume between 60 and 80% of energy and emit about 70% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Echoing Green is an American organization that has supported more than 700 social entrepreneurs around the world over the past thirty years. Among the projects supported are Teach for America, One Acre Fund, City Year and a project led by Michelle Obama, former first lady of the United States.
