Iberdrola Renovables will build in the United States two large photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) that will mark the company's entry into this business in the country, where it is already the second wind operator.

In a statement, Iberdrola's renewables subsidiary explains that one of the plants will be built in Alamosa, next to the city of Mosca, in the State of Colorado, one of the areas with the most solar resources in the United States.

This facility will have a capacity of 30 MW and its construction will begin, if the deadlines are met, at the end of this year, with the aim of entering into operation in 2011.

For its part, the Copper Crossing plant, located in Pinal County, in the State of Arizona, will have a capacity of 20 MW and is expected to be up and running in June 2011.

These two projects are part of Iberdrola Renovables' policy of investing in other technologies in which criteria of opportunity, sustainability and profitability are met. Of its power, 97% corresponds to wind power.

The two photovoltaic projects are guaranteed to receive the renewable energy stimulus funds ('grants'), granted by the US Government to renewable infrastructures that have begun their construction before the end of 2010. These incentives ensure a return of 30% of the investment made.

In addition, the electricity company is guaranteed the profitability of these infrastructures in the long term, after signing two agreements for the sale of renewable energy, called Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), with American companies. (EUROPA PRESS)
