Mexico. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources -Semarnat-, launched 14 centers for the recovery and recycling of refrigerant gases harmful to the ozone layer in the state of Jalisco, with the capacity to recover around 1,300 tons of these gases per year, in addition to training 6,500 refrigeration technicians in the Aztec country. These actions are carried out within the framework of the National Plan for the Elimination of Chlorofluorocarbons -CFCs, supported by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, in which more than US$5 million have been invested in infrastructure for training and in the acquisition of more than 2,000 refrigerant recovery equipment, to be donated to the most outstanding technicians of each course.
José de Jesús Álvarez Carrillo, delegate of Semarnat, explained that this program has two main priorities: "education as a strategy to increase labor skills and the care and preservation of the environment for the mitigation of the effects of climate change in addition to the protection of the ozone layer." Álvarez added that the goal for this year will be to train 7,000 technicians in good refrigeration practices in Mexico.
