Europe. The Norwegian company Stalkraft created a plant to generate power from the mixture of fresh water and salt water, called osmotic energy. This type of energy is renewable and free of polluting emissions. The idea of the plant is to explore the energy that arises when the two types of water are mixed. According to the company, fresh water is naturally attracted to salt water to dilute it, and the flow of water through a semipermeable membrane is enough to run a turbine and generate energy.
The company's project manager, Stein-Eric Skilhagen, hopes that in the future the plant will offer a solution to combat climate change, he also explained that although they are not producing much energy they have proven that it is possible to produce it by osmosis.
Stalkraft estimates that the potential of this energy is 1,600-1,700 TWh per year.
