GreenYellow Doubles Cold Storage of Colombian Avocado Company

GreenYellow duplica el almacenamiento en frío de empresa agrícola colombiana

Colombia. GreenYellow's implementation of 130 TR refrigeration infrastructure has enabled Hass avocado exporter Mountain Avocado to activate the economy of the agribusiness sector.

The exporting company Mountain Avocado was created by ten avocado producers located in different areas of Colombia. Each one is located in different thermal floors, achieving a productive cycle of approximately 10 months a year, cultivating on 1,500 hectares.

Héctor Acevedo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mountain, says: "We saw the need to take our fruit to other countries, distribute it all over the world, and Colombia has been positioning itself as a great producer of Hass avocado. We wanted to have this partnership to ensure the export of quality fruit, with a Colombian seal."

Today, GreenYellow adopts collaborative approaches with companies in the agribusiness sector, thus strengthening the national economy. The increase in fruit production drives the hiring of local jobs, which contributes positively to Colombia's image.

Colombian Export
According to Corpohass, the Hass avocado in the Colombian industry achieved a growth of 53% in January 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching almost 14 thousand tons at the beginning of this year, according to the DIAN.

To ensure that buyers enjoy this exquisite fruit in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Holland, Spain, China, Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and, soon, Chile; Mountain must ensure that the product arrives in excellent condition, which involves a rigorous brushing, sorting and refrigeration process.

"At Mountain, distribution is done according to markets, countries, customers and the type of fruit size that each one requires. And we have achieved all this hard work thanks to the increase in refrigeration capacity that GreenYellow has installed for us, which allows us to preserve the avocados and increase our production," added Acevedo.

Mountain Avocado chose GreenYellow as an ally, because, as Héctor Acevedo mentions, one of the steps to ensure that the product is preserved with adequate quality and can arrive in excellent condition to other countries, is to keep it in low refrigeration temperatures, around 3 degrees.

In this context, the Eco-Efficient Energy Services provided by GreenYellow and the investment in refrigeration infrastructure of 130 TR allowed Mountain to double its cold storage capacity. This achievement ensures that cold load demands and specific product requirements are met, minimizing energy and refrigerant consumption.

"As GreenYellow, we started to install a refrigeration system, which met the refrigeration load and the specific requirements for these products," said Juan Camilo Juaqui, coordinator of C&M Energy Efficiency. "It is a centralized system that allows you to operate and control the operation of the system, thus guaranteeing greater effectiveness in the process plant and a lower environmental impact," he added.

For her part, María Mónica Quijano, commercial leader of GreenYellow Colombia, stressed: "From the company we ensure comprehensive collaboration with Mountain Avocado, especially with regard to the design, implementation and, currently, operation and maintenance of the refrigeration system. This operation leads us to guarantee the best conditions of energy efficiency and sustainability for the avocado company in its production process."

"The production chain has allowed us to achieve significant achievements, such as the 1,500 tons of Colombian Hass avocados that stood out in the Super Bowl, the largest sporting event in the United States. Mountain, among other Colombian Hass avocado companies, exports their product to this country, possibly being acquired for this event. In Paradise, Nevada, both attendees at the Las Vegas Raiders' Allegiant Stadium and spectators at home were able to enjoy the best domestic product thanks to these exports, which have guaranteed quality and are refrigerated with Mountain Avocado and GreenYellow," the company concluded.
