United States. The consumption of business energy begins to be one of the points that most concern environmental institutions. In 2006, U.S. data centers consumed 1.5% of all electricity used in the country, equivalent to 5.8 million homes. This high energy consumption has led the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand the Energy Star program to data centers in order to provide an incentive for companies to seek efficiency.
This program will give companies the ability to compare their energy efficiency and the Energy Star logo will receive it if their data centers are 25% more efficient than those of their competition.
The energy information will be calculated using the PUE (power usage effectiveness) system, which allows to measure the total energy consumed by a data center divided by what actually reaches the equipment, in contrast to the cooling and other general expenses of the system.
