USA. Before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food Jean Ziegler, launched a strong criticism of the use of products such as corn, barley, sugar and vegetable oil as raw materials for the production of fuels, and called for its manufacture to be suspended for five years. This period, he said, would be used to look for alternative electricity generation technologies. He cites as an example the use of plants or waste unsuitable as food, and warns against increases in food prices. In this regard, he pointed out that "the effects that biofuels have on hunger are a matter of great concern in terms of the right to food." He also noted that while about 200 kg of corn converted into 50 liters of fuel fill a car's tank they are enough to feed a person for a year.
