Renewable power increases by 72% since 2005

The installed capacity of renewable energies has gone from 19,320 megawatts (MW) to 33,266 MW between 2005 and 2010, which represents an increase of 72%, while the premiums received for these technologies have experienced an increase of 387%, to more than 6,000 million in 2009, according to the Renewable Energies 2010 report, prepared by the Department of Knowledge Management of Torres y Carrera, Communication Consultants.

The report states that the future of renewable energies depends on the application of a new energy model and on achieving greater social involvement in the demand for clean energy in order to contribute effectively to the fight against climate change.

This social implication is necessary in view of the fact that, for the time being, these technologies cannot compete efficiently with fossil sources, including oil, gas and coal.

The study also highlights that the economic crisis has generated doubts about the competitiveness of renewable energies, whose growth in recent years has occurred thanks to public aid.

In fact, the premiums dedicated to the sector have gone from 1,245 million euros in 2005 to 6,071 million in 2009, which means more than quadrupling this item in just five years. In 2010 this figure will be exceeded, according to the forecasts of the National Energy Commission (CNE).

The aid, says the report, "has caused an increase in the cost of electricity, with an evident social rejection by consumers." (EUROPA PRESS)
