State-of-the-art technology for a world-class hospital

CETIC

Colombia. One year after its opening, the Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Cancer Treatment and Research Center (CTIC) enjoys solid recognition in the international arena, where it is considered a successful benchmark for hospital infrastructure.

Behind the successful model of energy efficiency, safety and optimal performance of the medical complex are technological solutions such as those of Johnson Controls, a company that brought together several experts in a webinar to share their experiences during the design and construction of the project.

"We concluded that the CTIC had to be a digital hospital and adaptable to future changes in technologies, without obsolescence. In addition to physical security, we work on certain additional parameters because there are areas whose operation is delicate in aspects such as the asepsis of space, the custody of high-cost medications and the protection of patient information," said Victor Hugo Dávila, project engineer at Construcciones Planificas.

Integration for efficiency in terms of end customer
The team conceived an instrumented, monitored and interconnected infrastructure to efficiently articulate the subsystems of water, electricity, elevators, lighting, access control, air conditioning, pneumatic mail, boilers, waste and fire networks, among others. To achieve this, the Metasys platform, developed by Johnson Controls, was chosen.

This is a platform that integrates all the subsystems present in a building and, in addition, can detect failures predictively, as well as maintenance needs in any of them. It also has a level of rapid escalation to different levels, which allows you to take the necessary measures in case of contingencies.

The director of the Sales Channel of Johnson Controls for Latin America, Andrés Álvarez, stressed that, beyond integrating technology, the ideal is that the end user can react in a timely manner if a failure occurs: "That is why it is necessary a panel that receives all the signals, but also allows them to scale, monitor and schedule maintenance so that, For example, equipment doesn't stop working during surgery," he explained.

Physical and cyber security
Another main aspect addressed by the panel of experts was the safety of the occupants, facilities, goods and information of the Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Cancer Treatment and Research Center.

In this regard, the participants highlighted the particular characteristics of the project, described as the first hospital in the world with a connection of 100 gigabytes per second for the transit of protected information, from and to each peripheral.

"In a project like this, security has a holistic approach that goes beyond loss prevention. Thus, the flows of personnel, guests and visitors were taken into account, a structured program for hardware, software and communications of the system was included, in addition to implementing an agile response capacity to the threats that arise to ensure operational continuity, "said Ignacio Castiñeira, Sales Manager of Security Products for Key Accounts of Johnson Controls.

For his part, Víctor Hugo Dávila emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in the current context: "The criminal not only enters through the door, but also through the network, hacking a camera or access control. That is why we guarantee the protection of all systems and select access controls with cards whose code changes every time someone authenticates. The system also allows you to profile users and manage the income to each area from the system or server."
