Smart photovoltaic energy solution to new solar plant in Chile

Chile. The new solar park for distributed generation in the city of Marchihue, in the Cardenal Caro province of Chile, generates three million watts (MW) of solar energy.

The installation is made up of more than nine thousand Tallmax TSM-PE14A 330-watt polycrystalline modules and Nclave SP160 horizontal trackers in monophyll composition, as well as inverters from its partner Huawei and a control and monitoring software of the installation that operates through The Cloud.

The project has the solutions of the company Trina Solar, based on its TrinaPro technology.

In Chile, Marchihue is a town in the Colchagua Valley that belongs to the Cardenal Caro Province, in the VI region of the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins. The site where the station was developed has a Mediterranean climate, with a hot and dry summer, a mild and rainy winter and a high solar radiation that makes it potential for the plant, which was put into operation in December 2018 and officially started operations in February of this year.

The project was developed by the company CarbonFree Chile under the small-scale distributed power generation (PMGD) scheme for a capacity of 9 MW or less. The general engineering, supply and construction (EPC) contracting service is provided by Eiffage Energía Chile and Trina Solar provided the Trina Pro smart photovoltaic solution.

TrinaPro is a smart PV solution that is designed for land-scale mountain solar installation projects, floating infrastructures and commercial applications. It systematically integrates three main components: high-efficiency modules, reliable solar tracking system and current inverter, achieving innovation in hardware, software, service process and cloud platform. Compared to fixed systems, this technology increases power generation by 20%, which has increased the customer's return on investment (ROI) by 1.5 to 3%; while unlike an assembled solar tracker system, it increases power generation by 3-7.5% and improves customer ROI by 0.5-1%.

"The expected solar power generation per year with this project is not less than 6,444 MW (megawatts) per hour, and the annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions that is expected to be achieved is approximately 46.39 million tons," said Álvaro García-Maltrás, Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean.

By optimizing equipment, system design, and high standards of on-site construction supervision, the system reliability of Chile's new power plant is also further guaranteed with TrinaPro. In addition, the innovation in business processes offered by this technology provides more professional and efficient pre-sales, sales and after-sales services, as well as a delivery of an integral solution to customers. Through the innovation of intelligent control and cloud platform, the customer's user and operating experience is greatly improved.

"With the saturation of the power transmission system, the market for large-scale projects in Chile is contracting, so now, MW's still small distributed energy segment will become mainstream in the future and our smart PV solutions can contribute to that transformation and market growth in Latin American countries," García-Maltrás added.

For Chile's new Marchihue solar park, Trina Solar provided its TrinaPro smart photovoltaic solution. The high-efficiency modules that this includes were mounted on Nclave Trina Solar's mono-row tracking system, which allows you to follow the sun at optimal angles, thus receiving maximum sunlight and generating up to 20% additional power in stable conditions.
