New study reveals energy potential and CO2 savings in 100 countries
With the phasing out of inefficient lighting, countries have the potential to significantly reduce their energy consumption, CO2 emissions and financial costs.
A new United Nations Environment (UNEP) and Global Environment (GEF) assessment, launched on 1 December 2010 at the UN Climate Change meeting in Cancun (COP 16, Climate Change Summit), presents estimates of emission reductions and potential savings that can be achieved by switching to energy-efficient lighting technologies in 100 countries that are still they have not started the transition.
By promoting the tangible benefits of efficient lighting, it is anticipated that a growing number of countries will be interested in engaging in transformation activities to eliminate inefficient lighting systems and reduce emissions. According to the International Energy Agency, electricity for lighting accounts for 19% of global energy consumption and 6 to 8% of greenhouse gases worldwide.
