The president of the Provincial Council of Cáceres, Juan Andrés Tovar, has participated in the Seminar on Energy that has been held in the Portuguese town of Viana do Castelo where he has presented some pilot projects for energy saving in the municipalities.

In his presentation, Tovar explained the work that the provincial institution has been doing in renewable energies and that is part of the Retaler project, Cross-border Network of Local Authorities in Renewable Energies.

It is a network made up of eleven partners of which the Provincial Council, through the Autonomous Agency for Local Development, is a third partner and works, together with the rest of the partnership, for the promotion of renewable energies.

"Our goal," explained the president, "is to achieve joint policies that contribute to the change of mentality of the authorities and citizens in terms of renewable energies and energy saving," reports the Cáceres deputation in a press release.

In this sense and to articulate the energy strategy in the province of Cáceres, there is a previous work guide in which the needs are detected.

PROJECT ACTIONS

Tovar explained the concrete actions of the project that are based on three main activities: studies for the implementation of renewable energies, pilot projects and the exchange of good practices, awareness and training.

Within the first of them, the concrete actions focus on a study on the potential of biomass in the province; an economic study for the replacement of oil boilers with biomass boilers in municipally owned buildings; definition and creation of the Network of Municipal Energy Managers and audits of buildings and public facilities.

In the second action, concerning pilot projects, Tovar has indicated that the Autonomous Agency for Local Development projects, within the Retaler project, the supply of two biomass boilers, a solar thermal panel for domestic hot water and supply of a chipper. "Actions," he said, "will be implemented in buildings owned by the municipality of the province to set an example from the Administration."

Regarding the exchange of good practices, awareness and training, Tovar has pointed out that "the objective of this action is the creation of a Network of Municipal Energy Managers to promote energy efficiency and the rational use of renewable energy sources at the local level".

Finally, to close the presentation, the president referred to the importance of the Retaler project since "the economic and social development experienced by the municipalities of Cáceres in recent years has meant a significant increase in expenses related to the energy consumption of their facilities, whether they are public lighting, municipal dependencies or services in general and with Retaler it is intended to face this fact that sometimes can be done become a problem for most of our municipalities," the note concludes.
