Colombia. A study conducted by Yale and Columbia Universities, which evaluated the environmental policies of 150 countries in the world, revealed that Colombia is the ninth country with the best formulation of programs aimed at controlling the effects of climate change.
In the document, Colombia's work in several fields was highlighted: sanitation and coverage of drinking water, care for biodiversity and control of the effects of global warming. "We are on the right track in the formulation and implementation of environmental policy in Colombia," said Environment Minister Juan Lozano Ramírez.
Peru. The government revealed the performance figures of the nation's productive sectors, observing a significant growth in the exploitation of hydrocarbons (12.3%). In this way, the general GDP figures will have a great scope, with which a consolidation in the economy of the Andean country is foreseen. On the other hand, the Ministry of Mines and Energy reported that the production of other minerals such as copper, zinc, silver and lead reached maximum levels. Other sectors such as fishing had a decrease of 0.81%, while the agricultural sector saw an increase of 7.41% at the end of 2007.
Mexico. Due to a shortage of resources, the Mexican government foresees a reduction in its oil reserves. Without capital for the exploration and exploitation of new deposits available in the depth of the Gulf of Mexico, the alternative is to promote the development of new energy sources. The executive believes that it is time to invest in new technologies that facilitate the production of biofuels such as ethanol. The first steps were already taken when the Law on the Promotion and Development of Bioenergetics was approved. Analysts announce that the project will be on track, when a consensus is reached among all sectors of the industry.
United States. Ferreira Construction's headquarters in Branchburg, NJ, is the first commercial building built in the United States that does not use electric power.
In partnership with government and industry, Ferreira built a "smart" building of 3,900 m2, whose power generation, from a renewable source, is greater than its consumption. A solar energy system with 223 kwh photovoltaic cells covers practically the entire roof with solar panels. In addition to producing hot water for the entire construction, the system emits radiant heat, powers high-efficiency roof units, a boiler condensing plant, and integrated web-based controls.
The system can be viewed on the internet to encourage energy conservation and the use of renewable sources. The U.S. Green Building Council estimates that the building sector accounts for 65% of total electricity consumption, for nearly half of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.
USA. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has approved a new standard in heating equipment for home heaters. These new rules will increase the minimum efficiency of natural gas to a level of 80 percent as opposed to the current 78 percent. It also increases the efficiencies of boilers from 80 to 82 percent and oil boilers from 80 to 83 percent.
"These revised standards will not only cut greenhouse gas emissions, but will allow consumers to learn how to make better decisions to save both energy and money," said Andy Karsner, assistant secretary of the office for Efficient and Renewable Energy.
According to the DOE, the total energy savings will reach a cumulative result in reductions of 7.8 tons of CO2 that will not be converted into greenhouse gases.
