Mexico. The Mexican nation presented the ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, and did so within the framework of the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations.
The testimony of the ratification was delivered by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Rafael Pacchiano Alamán, with which Mexico adds to the environmental benefits that the implementation of this Amendment will have, among which the reduction of the consumption of substances of high global warming potential and the consequent emission of the same, as well as avoiding the 0.5 °C increase in the global temperature of the planet in the year 2100.
The Mexican government thus reaffirms its commitment to the industrial, service, academic sectors and to all users of refrigeration and air conditioning systems to promote more efficient and HFC-free technologies.
Currently Mexico consumes just over 30 thousand tons of HFC, mainly in refrigeration and air conditioning systems; this means approximately 49.6 megatons of CO2 equivalent. Hence the importance of the Kigali amendment for reducing the consumption and production of these substances.
Finally, Secretary Pacchiano Alamán thanked the support of the UN and all its agencies, and congratulated the international community for taking advantage of the great opportunity offered by the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, for its entry into force in 2019.
The Amendment to the Montreal Protocol was approved on October 15, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, and was approved by the Senate of the H. Congress of the Union on April 26, 2018, by decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on June 22.
