Natural ventilation for roofs prevents heat accumulation

Spain. A modular ventilation system for roofs was created by a group of researchers from the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) of Castellón. The technology solves the problem of heat accumulation due to solar radiation that occurs under roofs without having to implement cooling systems.

The system patented by the UJI is a passive and energy-efficient solution for the thermal conditioning of buildings. The module can be applied in restoration and rehabilitation of roofs, especially those of historical value, and in new buildings, according to the UJI statement.

"Both in single-family houses and in the penthouses of multi-family homes, it is increasingly important and necessary to optimize the occupation in the plant and inhabit spaces that were traditionally reserved for other activities on the floors under cover. The problem with these spaces is that the temperature is usually very high as a result of direct radiation," explains Juan Antonio García Esparza, researcher in the Technology, Quality and Sustainability in Building group of the UJI.

The solution developed by the researchers allows heat to be dissipated through natural outdoor ventilation through modules whose manufacture and installation is simple, economical and in accordance with the legislation on economic efficiency.

The patented module comprises a frame with an elongated, flat configuration and an inverted "U" shaped section. This frame is intended to join the structural elements of the cover so that a space is created between an upper face of the frame and said cover through which the air flows, enabling the advantages of cooling.

"To cover the entire roof, a plurality of frames is used that are embedded together. In addition, there are eaves, with several openings, also intended to allow the passage of air, for which there are also openings in the area of the roof ridge, "explains García Esparza.

This system allows air to enter through the openings of the eaves, travel through the cover through the free space that is created with the frames and exit through the openings of the ridge pieces. This free movement of air through the roof cools the cabin of the building that is directly under the roof, thus improving the comfort conditions of these spaces.

Once the technology has been developed and patented, the Technology, Quality and Sustainability in Building group has begun the search phase for industrial partners to transfer the technology for commercialization.
