The president of Mexico, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, met with the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, where he acknowledged that South Africa has been an example of struggle and perseverance against adverse conditions, being an example for developing countries in the fight against climate change.

In addition, Felipe Calderón affirmed that Climate Change "is a matter of life and death" and that if coal emissions are not curbed, island states can be underwater. The dialogue "Maintaining our ambitions against climate change in the long term" was attended by the heads of state of Bolivia, the Central African Republic, Guyana, the Republic of Kiribati, Nauru, Norway, Samoa and South Africa, as well as the President of the World Bank, Robert Zoelick and the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), José Ángel Gurría.

The President of Bolivia, Juan Evo Morales Ayma affirmed that "The human being cannot live without mother earth, but the planet can exist without the human being," he said. "We are no longer in the era of debating the class struggle, the class struggle is over, we are in the stage of debating life in harmony with Mother Earth."
