Solar Stadium in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup

Qatar has set out to host the World Cup in 2022, and now that they have Foster Partners backing them up with an impressive football stadium for its world-class energy efficiency. The iconic Lusail Stadium was revealed at the football leaders' conference in London, and will be large enough to accommodate more than 86,000 spectators. Designed specifically for the extreme summer conditions of the capital, Doha, the stadium will stay cool in the heat and will also generate solar power from all of the parking lots surrounding the stadium.

Foster Partners adds a big name to make a bid from Qatar for the World Cup in 2022. The country is currently competing against eight other bids for the 2018 and 2022 games, including Australia, South Korea, the United States, England, Japan, Russia, Spain and Portugal, and Belgium and the Netherlands. The FP project has been conceived as the main stadium in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and would be used for opening ceremonies and opening games, as well as final matches. The stadium is characterized by a shaped gable roof that appears to float above the concrete seat with a retractable roof that can fully be opened or closed. A water reflection pool surrounds the entire stadium and spectators must cross a moat to reach the ecological stadium.

The Lusail offers optimal views for all viewers in a cool and comfortable environment regulated by environmental cooling technologies. Located in a new development in the north of Doha, the stadium is accessed by a new metro line and direct roads, which is expected to stimulate the growth of the area. Solar panels will be installed on canopies in the parking and service areas in order to generate renewable energy for the stadium when in use, and will provide electricity to the neighborhood when there are no games.
