United States. A Detroit engineer was sentenced to probation for one year and fined $5,000 for promoting the R-22 refrigerant and putting it up for sale to unauthorized buyers from the classifieds website Craigslist.
Panama. The Panamanian Association of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Apayre, headed by its president, Eng. Pedro Vasquez McKay, offered the Government of this country technical advice on everything that has to do with the air conditioning and ventilation system of the Torre Financiera project.
Although it claims to have little information about the work, the Association evidenced its concern about the extensive energy consumption that the building may have if some considerations are not taken into account. According to its members, it is estimated that the heat transmission coefficient "U" of the glass walls of the Financial Tower is much higher than that of the walls of ordinary cement blocks, which will imply an enormous thermal load for the air conditioning system, and therefore an "impressive" demand and consumption of electrical energy. Likewise, they assure that "to comply with the ventilation required for the users of the internal environments of the place, it is necessary to inject and extract at each level a large volume of fresh air", something that they do not see possible in a building with glass walls. Additionally, according to Apayre, there is no indication of where the polluted air will leave the parking area, a situation that worries because there is a hospital nearby where these toxic gases can reach. Finally, the engineers indicate that for a work of this class it requires "large mechanical equipment" that must be installed outside the building, usually on the roof. However, the design does not have a place for it and for this reason they must be located "in the external parking lots or in the gardens of the HST hospital".
The first building in the Inca country to receive LEED certification is a luxurious hotel located in the Cusco region called Tambo del Inka and part of the Libertador hotel chain.
The hotel was conditioned to save 80% on water consumption, as they recycle the wastewater through a treatment plant and use it again to irrigate the gardens of the establishment.
Other characteristics for which the country hotel achieved this certification is due to the fact that it can save 36% in electricity consumption thanks to the use of refrigerants and an indoor air conditioning monitoring system.
Directors of the hotel chain said that for the next five years they aspire to achieve LEED certification in the other six hotels they have.
Mexico. The D.F. will host, between March 1 and 3 of this year, three courses on the entire LEED concept, organized by the company Revitaliza Consultores, which specializes in assistance to sustainable projects.
The course is aimed at engineers, architects and professionals related to sustainable construction as well as for those interested in LEED advice or certification.
During the three days of courses, the topics will be as follows: March 1 - LEED for existing buildings, operation and maintenance focused on hotels. March 2 - Concepts and fundamentals of green buildings. March 3 - Preparation for the LEED GA and LEED AP BD+C exam.
Chile. Four buildings to be built in Santiago will seek LEED certification, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, reflecting a growing trend in implementing sustainable and efficiency standards and principles in the construction of new buildings around the world.
The projects that will apply for certification have a high influence in the Chilean capital, due to their size and the places where they will be built. These are the new offices of Farmacias Cruz Verde, which will have a façade with climate control that will reduce the energy used by 30%, in addition to night ventilation systems and its location will take advantage of solar energy, especially during the winter; the Deloitte corporate building, which would open in 2012, whose façade will have a design with breaks that will allow better use of the sun's rays.
On the other hand, the Costanera Lyon apartment building, with LED lighting systems and savings of up to 20% in water consumption, would be the first collective housing type property that would obtain certification; and the U. Diego Portales Library, with an area of 15 thousand square meters built with materials that do not emit polluting particles, will also have a façade covered by vegetation and a water reuse system.
