A group of researchers from Mexico and Canada, have revealed another existing point of contamination in Mexico in an article in the journal "Environmental Pollution" a study where they claim that the Yucatan aquifer is contaminated mainly with medicines, narcotics such as amphetamines and cocaine and chemicals such as herbicides and diesel derivatives.
The main cause (although its exact mechanism is unknown) is the tourism sector, the most alarming thing is that all this waste contaminates the aquatic caves of the area and the reefs, in conjunction with overfishing and climate change, it is possible that there has been a loss of up to 50% of the reefs since 1990, which are the main attractions of tourists.
In response to the study carried out, the Mexican government "Semarnat" announces that it will analyze the contamination in these aquifers, to have more specific data and counteract the problem.
