UBV COP16 – Calderón meets with Un Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

In the framework of his participation in the High-level Segment of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) and the 6th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP6), the President of the United Mexican States, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, met today with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on the progress of the negotiations at these Conferences. They agreed that the process, conducted under the Presidency of Mexico, has made significant progress and that obtaining a comprehensive and balanced package of decisions is feasible.

They also considered that Cancun is an opportunity to strengthen the multilateral system and reaffirm that it is the most appropriate instrument to find solutions to global problems, such as climate change.

The UN Secretary-General celebrated the level of transparency and inclusiveness with which Mexico has served as President of COP16, which has been recognized by the participants. This has helped to restore confidence in the process and fostered a positive atmosphere in the negotiations.

In short, he praised Mexico's effort, not only as an organizer of the event, but as a key player in the conduct of the negotiations.

President Felipe Calderón was accompanied by the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Environment and Natural Resources, Economy and Energy: Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, Bruno Ferrari García de Alba and Georgina Kessel Martínez, respectively.
