Mexico. World Food Day was celebrated last October, created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), promotes awareness and implementation of actions to alleviate the problem of hunger.
It is currently estimated that almost 690 million people (8.9% of the world's total population) are food deficient – a figure that increased 10 million in one year and 60 million in 5 years. "We have a very important role in helping to preserve, protect and extend the world's food supply," said Jimmy Washington, Carrier's Director of Sustainable Refrigeration.
Carrier's refrigeration solutions help reduce food waste in the cold chain, which totals 1/3 of all food produced for human consumption, costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion annually.
In addition to the financial quota and the global impact of hunger, food shortages have numerous negative impacts on the environment, due to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inherent in the production process. In fact, if food losses were a country, they would represent the third largest emitter of GHGs.
To help alleviate this crisis and feed a growing society, the corporation is leading the way in research and technologies to create a stronger, smarter and more connected cold chain. Advanced digital innovations and solutions create a more effective and efficient cold chain, where actionable intelligence is harnessed to reduce waste and food insecurity.
To offer fresh and healthy food to people throughout the United States, Carrier Transicold has provided, since 2017, support to Feeding America, through the granting of refrigeration units that, together with an aid of 600,000 dollars and the technical service provided by the network of distributors of the company, has managed to boost the work of this organization and its 200 food banks. This contribution has financed refrigerant solutions from 32 refrigerated trucks and trailers for food banks serving 18 states.
To continue strengthening Carrier Transicold's actions in the fight against food insecurity and global food waste, its division in Mexico has joined forces with the Network of Food Banks of Mexico (BAMX), with the aim of promoting the distribution of basic basket products to millions of Mexicans who suffer from food shortages.
In this way, Carrier Transicold de México has collaborated with BAMX through training to its transport network; and with benefits, both in the acquisition of refrigeration equipment for their vehicles, and in the preventive and corrective maintenance of their transfer units.
