Chile. The Chilean company Movener has been working on a solar energy solution to be used in trucks that have equipment for refrigerated transport. This technology is being tested by the Walmart supermarket chain and has presented positive results.
According to the note published by the Diario Financiero de Chile, in the last stage of the longest phase for a project of this type, that of R & D, after the tests this solution allowed a saving of the order of 80% in energy consumption. "If before they spent $100,000 on oil, today they will spend $20,000 on electricity," said Usach Civil Mechanical Engineer Gonzalo Pacheco, CEO of Movener.
To that is added the reduction by 70% in the maintenance item, since an electrical system has fewer moving parts, in addition to zero emission of greenhouse gases, particulates, heat and noise.
"You reduce to the maximum the possibility of contaminating the load that at the end of the day is the most important thing, which is food most of the time," says Pacheco about the first experience of this type in Chile and Latin America.
"The opportunities based on solar energy are enormous. Walmart Chile has taken the lead in this challenge by exploring how Movener can bring to the business, and the success of the truck pilot is the demonstration," says Carlos Fernández, partner of Innspiral, and who leads this project.
"This open innovation initiative is in that line and the success of the call proves us right. More than 180 projects arrived, of which there are already three in the pilot phase. The CEO of Movener reveals that the first step for this solution, which has the support of Corfo, is its implementation in Walmart and the idea is then to massify it to all commercial trucks and trailers in Chile. Hence expand to the rest of the Latin American market.
