The coffee country presented a report in which it was known that Greenhouse Gas emissions have increased there by 20% in the last 15 years.
The report was presented during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP22 "The Action COP" in Marrakech, Morocco, where concrete actions and the next steps to implement the Paris Agreement (PA) were established.
Colombia presented at COP22 the first report in Latin America where emissions are evidenced at the departmental level, in order to implement programs and projects that contribute to mitigation and avoid the generation of new sources of emissions. In that report it was known that Colombia's GHG emissions have increased 20% in the last 15 years.
At COP22 in Marrakesh (Morocco), the following main objectives were developed: i) take measures to implement the Paris Agreement, which entered into force on November 4 and aims to reduce these emissions throughout the world and avoid the increase in the temperature of the planet greater than 2 degrees Celsius; ii) review actions against the commitments made at COP21; (iii) resuming countries' efforts to achieve the proposed objectives; (iv) review funding for developing countries, (v) discuss the possibility of taking additional measures to those already agreed; (vi) provide information on measures taken to limit emissions; and (vii) review domestic State measures taken.
Through the management and participation of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Colombia presented the measures to achieve the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 and a roadmap for their implementation. Download the press release here.
As already mentioned, Colombia announced the levels of emissions at the departmental level and constitutes a unique report in Latin America, which will allow decisions to be made at the territorial level and will allow to know key and strategic information to establish a strategy for the fulfillment of the agreed goals. The most representative findings of this study show that:
- In 20 years the country's emissions increased by 15% (35 million tons of CO2 equivalent), Colombia went from 245 Mton in 1990 to 281.5 Mton in 2010.
- The departments with the highest number of emissions are: i) Antioquia with 22.94 megatons, ii) Goal 21.24 megatons, iii) Caquetá 19.84 megatons, iv) Valle del Cauca 16.50 megatons, and v) Santander 14.30 megatons, which represent 37% of the national total.
- The sectors with the highest emissions generation were: i) forestry sector 36%, ii) agricultural sector 26%, iii) transport 11%, iv) manufacturing industries 11%, and v) mines and energy 10%. On the other hand, the sectors that increased emissions the most in 20 years were: i) manufacturing industry 94% from 14 to 28 Mton, ii) mines and energy 85% from 14 to 25 Mton, iii) transport 53% 18 to 28 Mton.
- Colombia ranks fifth in Latin America in emissions and went from emitting 0.37% of global emissions to 0.42% in recent years.
