The Convention on Climate Change is approaching

International. From November 30 to December 11, governments will reach a new agreement on climate change in Paris, which should put all nations on the path to a sustainable future,  preventing the rise of the global average temperature to more than 2 degrees Celsius. This is the internationally agreed line of defense against the worst future climate impacts.

The agreement of the Paris Conference (COP 21/CMP 11) will be under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, will be driven by the final objective of the same, will be guided by its principles of equality and common but differentiated responsibility, depending on the respective capacities and taking into account national circumstances.

The negotiations are developing frameworks to increase action and accountability in the following key areas:

National commitments and plans for the post-2020 period, compiled in the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs).

International transparency and accountability of country actions.

Adequate technological and financial support for developing countries to build their own clean energy and climate resilience futures.

Trajectory of global emissions and long-term direction.

The countries under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change produced at their session in Geneva, in February of this year, pdf-icon the text of the official negotiation on which the substantial negotiations are based.

At the Bonn conference in June (SB42), Parties asked the co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (the body tasked with reaching a new agreement) to issue a consolidated version of the formal text of "Geneva", as a tool to assist governments in their negotiations.

On July 24, 2015, the co-chairs issued the document, which provides clarity on what the emerging legal agreement might contain, what decisions could be made at the time it is adopted, and what others will need to be taken to make it fully operational before its entry into force in 2020. Before the Paris conference, two more sessions are planned in Bonn, one between August and September and one in October.
