ASHRAE updates standard 62.1 and 62.2

ASHRAE

International. ASHRAE announced the publication of the 2022 version of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1 and 61.2 - 2022 for ventilation system design and acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ). Both standards specify minimum ventilation rates and other measures to minimize adverse effects on the health of occupants.

Standard 62.1
Standard 62.1 specifies minimum ventilation rates and other measures aimed at providing indoor air quality (IAQ) that is acceptable to human occupants and minimizes adverse health effects. The standard provides procedures and methods to meet minimum ventilation and IAQ requirements for engineers, design professionals, owners and jurisdictional authorities where model codes have been adopted.

Since its original publication, Standard 62.1 has been revised and improved in a way that makes it more than a standard for ventilation and air handling. To mean that indoor air quality goes beyond minimum ventilation requirements, and in recognition of those aspects of building systems (equipment, filtration, controls and more) that contribute to an acceptable IAQ, the title of the standard was updated to "Acceptable ventilation and ventilation". Indoor air quality."

What's new in the 2022 edition of the standard are changes that represent years of research, statistical evidence, and improved building systems and technologies:
* Section 5, "Systems and Equipment," was reorganized to better reflect the airflow path and illustrate how buildings, systems, and equipment relate
* Continuous focus on IAQ, including improvements to the IAQ Procedure, establishment of maximum dew point temperatures in mechanically cooled buildings and required exhaust air separation distances
* Relocation of healthcare-related spaces within the scope of ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170 to a new regulatory appendix
* Updated definitions, clarified air density adjustments and elimination of elements related to transient occupations that are now included in Standard 62.2
* New title reflecting how indoor air quality (IAQ) goes beyond minimum ventilation requirements

Standard 62.2
Standard 62.2, the ASHRAE standard on residential ventilation and IAQ for housing units with non-transient occupants, was updated for 2022. The standard describes the minimum requirements for achieving an acceptable IAQ through housing unit ventilation, local mechanical exhaust and source control.

Changes to the revised edition include the reorganization and clarification of existing provisions, stricter compartmentalization requirements for semi-detached housing units, and a new requirement for mechanical ventilation systems of balanced housing units or supply for semi-detached housing units in enclosed corridors.
