July recorded the highest electricity demand in the history of Argentina

Argentina. The Foundation for Electrical Development presented its most recent report on electricity consumption in the country, which indicates that with temperatures lower than those of July 2017, the same month of 2018 presented an increase in the demand for electricity of 6.9%, compared to the same period last year.

In the same sense, the consumption of Capital and the Buenos Aires Conurbano showed a significant increase in both Edesur (8.6%) and Edenor (10.2%), while in the rest of the country it showed an increase: 7.2%, according to provisional data from Cammesa (Electricity Wholesale Market Management Company).

In this sense, the rise occurred both in residential and commercial users throughout the country, while it fell in large and medium users such as industrial users. In this regard, it should be clarified that July had a record consumption and, in turn, represents the highest demand in nominal terms in history, after January 2017 (12,442.3 GWh) and January 2018 (12,334.3 GWh).

Likewise, July 2018 marked an ascent that is related to seasonal aspects due to the fact that a temperature lower than the historical average was registered and, in addition, represented the most important percentage increase of the year. Thus, the first seven months of 2018 closed with an increase of 2.6% compared to 2017 and, in detail, only two months showed decreases: January (-1.7%) and May (-1.6%).

Also, there was a new record for maximum gross power on July 24 at 20:35 when it reached the mark of 23,776 MW. At the same time, on Wednesday, July 25, the historical maximum of energy demanded in winter to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI) was exceeded on a business day, when it reached 479.3 Gwh.

In July 2018, the total net demand of the MEM was 12,603.9 GWh; while, in the same month of 2017, it had been 11,786.6 GWh1. Therefore, the year-on-year comparison shows an increase of 6.9%. Meanwhile, there was a month-on-month growth of 5.8%, compared to June 2018, when it had had a demand of 11,917.9 Gwh.
