International. From September 25 to October 1, World Sustainable Building Week is celebrated, an emblematic event of the global green building movement organized by the WorldGBC and led by its network of more than 70 Green Building Councils and its 32,000 member companies.
Thousands of climate action advocates, Green Building Councils, communities, businesses and nonprofits on five continents are increasing the volume of the need for all buildings to be net carbon-zero buildings by 2050.
World Green Building Week aims to raise the potential of green buildings, which currently contribute around 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (increasing to 50% of emissions in major cities), to be a powerful solution in the fight against climate change.
Terri Wills, CEO of the World Green Building Council, said: "This Global Week is illuminating net-zero buildings – the heroes in our fight against climate change. With the growing threat of extreme weather patterns and intense storms experienced by many around the world, it is clear that a change is needed in the way we are building and in the way we address the long-term sustainability and resilience of communities."
The CEO added that "net zero carbon buildings are a practical and efficient solution to build with these factors in mind. In addition, we will need all buildings, new and old, to be net by 2050 to maintain the Paris Agreement."
This year, the week is marked by more than 180 activities and events – panels and seminars, report launches, green building tours and much more – led by Green Building Councils, its 32,000 members and WorldGBC Partners such as JP Morgan Chase, Phillips, and Shaw Industries.
"We are also ready to reach more than 2.5 million people through our Thunderclap social media campaign – a key message that says we want buildings that help us win the fight against climate change," Wills explained.
