The Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) and the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect, Cubasolar, have signed a strategic alliance for the exchange of experiences and information, as well as for cooperation in possible trade missions that promote the development of photovoltaic energy in both countries.
Cuba, which has a solar radiation level of 5kWh/m2 per day throughout the national territory, has 22MW of installed photovoltaic power, distributed among 14 photovoltaic parks. Currently, 4% of the electricity generated comes from clean sources.
For Jorge Barredo, president of UNEF, "these types of alliances are fundamental to promote the development of the Spanish photovoltaic sector both inside and outside our borders. Sharing the experience and know-how of two players with such capacity in the sector is a key boost to the business possibilities and expansion of photovoltaics."
For his part, the president of Cubasolar, Luis Bérriz Pérez, has pointed out that: "at this time, when the energy policy of our country is based on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources, an alliance with the Spanish Photovoltaic Union is strategic for the achievement of of sustainable development".
According to the Policy on Renewable Sources and the Efficient Use of Energy, approved by the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly of Cuba in 2014, together with the implementation schedule of the prospective development of renewable energies, the planning for solar parks foresees the installation of 700 MW of new electrical power. to 2030. By meeting the objectives of this policy, the country would have 24% of electricity production from renewable sources, which would contribute to mitigating the impact of climate change.
