Key to energy conservation

Refrigeration and air conditioning systems are becoming increasingly important in the current global context, because in the face of the progressive increase in the temperature of the planet these systems have become almost indispensable elements to maintain a comfortable environment. Therefore, today cooling towers are consolidated as one of the best alternatives in terms of air conditioning. Its efficiency, as well as its contribution to rationalize energy consumption have made it one of the most used systems in construction projects in Latin America.

Taking into account this reality, we want to make in this edition an approach to the use that cooling towers applied to air conditioning systems can have.

Currently, cooling towers with a water source heat pump are beginning to be used more frequently in new constructions in Latin America; its efficiency is due to the use of water instead of air during the cooling process, which allows the system  to be cooled more agilely.

This efficiency is reflected above all when they are used in large complexes such as hospitals, office buildings, hotels and those with great application of commercial air conditioning.

In addition, companies that decide to implement cooling towers will find an evolution in the materials used for their manufacture. Due to the rise in the price of steel, which since 2002 until now has practically doubled, tower manufacturers have looked for other alternatives to reduce costs without affecting quality.

Steel, a material widely used in the construction of towers, is being partially replaced by fiberglass, without sacrificing the final quality of the product. Another vital aspect to guarantee the efficiency of the towers is the realization of an adequate maintenance by specialized personnel, since being equipment in constant exposure to water and the atmosphere must have specific care.

Protec Cooling Towers, aware of this constant exposure, began to develop fiberglass units with stainless steel structures. Generating savings by using this metal in smaller quantities and guaranteeing greater resistance to corrosion, as well as more durability in the product.

The new production processes of cooling towers also aim to  ensure greater resistance to natural phenomena such as hurricanes. For example, in the Dominican Republic, towers are being requested that can withstand a category five hurricane, because in case of eventualities like these all systems must continue to operate normally.
