New La Cabaña wind farm in Chile will generate 105.6 MW of renewable energy

parque eólico

Chile. The Chilean subsidiary of the company Enel Green Power began at the end of last year the construction of the La Cabaña wind farm, a construction located in the region of La Araucanía, within the commune of Angol, which will have an installed capacity of 105.6 MW.

According to Enel, the most innovative aspect of this project, which will have an investment of approximately 190 million dollars, is that it incorporates an energy storage system using lithium batteries (BESS of 34.3 MW), which allows a more dynamic control and greater possibilities for energy production.

"La Cabaña is part of the portfolio of renewable projects that the company is promoting in the country, and through which it has promoted the process of decarbonization of its generation matrix, in line with its just energy transition strategy."

Details of the work
The La Cabaña wind farm will be equipped with 22 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 4.8 MW. Overall, this plant will be able to generate 300 GWh of energy per year, equivalent to 0.3% of annual electricity generation in Chile.

According to Enel Chile, this project will expand its line of facilities in the field of renewable energies, which already has "hydroelectric plants (HPP) with a total capacity of 3.5 GW, solar power plants (SPP) with a total capacity of 1.5 GW, as well as wind and geothermal energy (GPPs) totaling 642 MW and 69 MW respectively".

Another relevant fact is that the construction will employ approximately 450 people. In that sense, and according to a statement from the company "aspires to contribute to local development through the generation of policies to create shared value and above all, through the hiring of local labor specialized in the development of renewable power plants".

Fabrizio Barderi

Finally, Fabrizio Barderi, General Manager of Enel Chile, said:

"Through the start of construction of La Cabaña, we continue our path to continue leading the energy transition process towards a generation matrix based on renewable energies. Through the development of La Cabaña we also give continuity to our hybridization strategy of non-conventional renewable generation plants. This is Enel Chile's first wind project to incorporate storage batteries, through which we will be able to have greater flexibility in the management of the plant."
