Agreement signed to offer efficient refrigeration solutions to group of airports in Latin America

BASE, un socio especializado de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio AmbienteLatin America. BASE, a specialized partner of the United Nations for the Environment, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Council International of Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) to collaborate in supporting airports in the implementation of Cooling as a Service (CaaS) to accelerate the adoption of clean and energy-efficient cooling technologies.

ACI is a global professional association representing the interests of airport operators worldwide. Founded in 1991, today ACI Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), which is ACI's branch in that region, has more than 270 member airports in 34 countries, representing 95% of commercial air traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 600 million passengers, 9 million aircraft movements and 5.4 million tons of cargo per year. ACI's mission is to provide support for a safe, stable, efficient and environmentally friendly airport system.

With this collaboration, the selected solutions (which includes CaaS) will support the reduction of energy consumption of airports, improving their carbon footprint and increasing air quality and safety within their infrastructures. "As airports gradually reopen through the pandemic, the safety and well-being of their customers, along with the fight against climate change and energy efficiency, are their top priority," says Dimitris Karamitsos, senior business developer at BASE.

"ACI Latin America and the Caribbean is very excited to partner with BASE to explore how airports can use energy in a more sustainable way while facing climate change," says Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC. "Airports have huge energy needs and, in some regions, particularly in the tropics and island nations, the cost of energy is extremely high. At the same time, airports around the world are working to reduce emissions and operate in an environmentally sustainable manner. That's why partnering with BASE makes a lot of sense, and our members should consider the concepts they're developing, such as CaaS and servitization. Working to reduce operating costs while achieving environmental sustainability is an unbeatable win-win proposition." says Dr. Echevarne.

BASE and ACI-LAC will collaborate to optimize CaaS contractual arrangements to the needs of airports.

"Airports are large and complex infrastructures, which will benefit greatly from sustainable and energy-efficient solutions. The strong value proposition of the 'as-a-service' model enables access to attractive technologies based on cost and performance without the risks that are sometimes associated with innovation for end users," explains Karamitsos.
