International. In China, the world's largest air purifier is already operating, an experimental tower up to 100 meters high that is located in the city of Xian. This new system breathes up to 10 million cubic meters of clean air into this city daily. The project is currently in the testing phase.
"The results are encouraging," Cao Junji, who heads the team that is evaluating the results of a system to fight smog or smog that he says is unprecedented, told the South China Morning Post.
With air pollution at the origin of the death of 70 out of every 100,000 Chinese inhabitants, the Asian giant is among the top positions in this ranking. To reverse this situation, the air purifying tower emerges. Its effects, says Junji, are noticeable in ten kilometers around. For this, the base of this construction is formed by greenhouses the size of half a football field. Their function is essential, because these structures absorb polluted air that, thanks to solar energy, is heated and channeled into the tower. When it rises, the air passes through different filters, to finally be released totally clean.
A key strength of this innovation lies in its ability to operate virtually without consuming energy beyond what it gets from the sun.
Running since last year, the performance of the system will continue to be studied by the Environment Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After enabling a dozen measuring stations in the tower's surroundings, the team expects to deliver concrete results in March 2018. If expectations are consolidated, this tower would be just the beginning. In the minds of experts, replicate the system in other Chinese cities, but on a much larger scale. So much so, as to multiply by five the dimensions of each purifier that, with greenhouses of up to 30 km², could give encouragement to any medium-sized city.
