Experts from Tecnalia, Gamesa and Iberdrola advocate positioning themselves at the forefront of the offshore wind energy sector

Experts from Tecnalia, Gamesa and Iberdrola have underlined, at the opening of the second edition of the Muskiz FP summer courses, the importance of positioning themselves on the "front line" in the offshore wind energy sector, which "represents the future of clean and profitable energy production", as reported by the organizers of this initiative.

The courses were inaugurated on Monday by the director of the Somorrostro Training Center, Juan Manuel Seco, the mayor of Muskiz, Borja Liaño, the vicar of the Bishopric of Bilbao, Kerman López, and the Deputy Minister of Vocational Training of the Department of Education and Universities of the Basque Government, Carlos Crespo.

This second edition will focus on the global challenges in the world of energy and future opportunities, offshore energy and new sources of energy generation applied to transport, as well as the strategies set in this field for the 2020 horizon.

After the opening ceremony, the first day was held, dedicated to 'Efficiency and Sustainability', in which "the dilemma" of global energy sustainability and solidarity distribution was addressed, as well as one of the offshore energy options, among which the wind energy production at sea stands out, in which the Basque industry "has a lot to contribute".

The conference, presented by the director of the Energy Cluster, Juan José Alonso, was attended by the Director of Technological Development of the Energy Unit of Tecnalia Energía, Pedro Ibáñez, who delved into the challenges of the energy sector, technological trends and industrial opportunities, and specifically in the future of offshore wind, a field in which the Basque Country is "at the forefront" of research and development.

"We have to look at the sea. Natural gas is a bridge energy, until marine production plants are developed. Floating platforms and structures, with large windmills, are the future," he said. Ibáñez underlined the role of basque industry in this horizon, convinced that "we can be a world power in suppliers of equipment and technology for the production of offshore wind energy".

As indicated, companies such as Iberdrola and Gamesa, and research centers such as Tecnalia, "we are already demonstrating it" and "the field that opens up to them in the coming years is enormous". "The world demands this type of solution, and we have to be on the front line," he insisted.

In this line, the head of offshore wind projects of Iberdrola Renovables, Alvaro Martínez Palacio, recalled that the Basque company, "world leader in renewable energy production with 13,000 MW of operational production worldwide", has a project on the British coast that will involve the implementation of "gigantic" wind towers, with blades the size of a football field, in a marine area higher than that of the entire Basque Country.

For its part, the technological development and manufacture of equipment by Gamesa, another Basque company "world reference" in the sector, has been analyzed by the director of Components and Industrialization, Maite Basurto. (EUROPA PRESS)
